The Polski Theatre production of KLINIKEN / love is colder … directed by Łukasz Twarkowski will be a special event during this year festival T-Mobile New Horizons. The production was inspired by Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s work. This cult German film director is very well known to the audience of T-Mobile New Horizons because his films were included into the program of the festival in 2005. Love is colder than death is the title of Fassbinder’s film made in 1969.

The first part of Twarkowski’s production was based upon Lars Norén’s play The Clinic: “Łukasz Twarkowski shows in a very first scene of Kliniken that he interested in a theatre of a liminal perception. A scene of a lovers’ quarrel, interrupted by a film slate, is suddenly put into a deep background of a party organized to celebrate an accomplishment of a footage. The beginning of the production turns out to be the last scene of a Fassbinder film. A film frame changes into a filter through which we are watching the whole shoot. This horizontal trap, causing a vertigo in the audience, announces a staging art of Kliniken.” (Paweł Soszyński, dwutygodnik.com)

The second part of the production is a staging of Anka Herbut’s play Traumgruppe inspired by life and work of “Fass”. Neurotics from Norén’s play The Clinic become characters cut out from the imagination of a cult German film director. The cinema infects the reality.

Shows on July 25th and 26th, 2013, at 7.00 p.m. at the Świebodzki Train Station Stage (20c Orląt Lwowskich square). Running time: 180 minutes (one intermission). Both shows with English subtitles.

Some oppinions:

KLINIKEN / love is colder … directed by Łukasz Twarkowski in Polski Theatre in Wrocław is the matures debut which we experienced during last years in Polish theatre. An extraordinary consciousness of an aesthetic form, a skill to put it into a life, a confidence and a cooperation of the actors, an unusual content to be delivered – all of these make up a success of this production. It tells on a freedom which is hardly achievable in a social as well as personal context. On a human being who is a political and existential subject in the same time. On a life-struggle and a life-spectacle.

We are delighted by a great set design, really great (Piotr Choromański and Łukasz Twarkowski). And by costumes (Marta Stoces), and by lights (Bartosz Nalazek), and video (Jakub Lech and Bartosz Nalazek). And by music too (Bogumił Misala). As far as an audiovisual work is concern, it is marvelous piece: a psychedelic, perfectly constructed combo. It intrigues, it involves, it surprises. And if one adds a great ensemble of Polski Theatre (Halina Rasiakówna – love forever!), we witness an unusual production, the theatre of a high rank.

A performance of Twarkowski and Herbut prepared in Wrocław is […] a production […] radically looking for a new aesthetic and a new model of artistic influence. A touching and expanding impoverished maps of our beliefs, this production quests for new motifs in a picture of a human being. A brave and original production. As for acting – excellent.

Kliniken... amuses in one moment and frightens in another. However, what really matters is that it forces us to think.
